What is Clinical Research?
Clinical Research (clinical trail) is a research study conducted on human participants that is designed to answer specific questions about medical or behavioral interventions (drugs, nutritional supplements, surgical intervention, or devices). Clinical trails are used to determine if these items are safe,and effective for use.

Diabetes Type 2
Do you have type 2 diabetes? Are diet and exercise not working? You may be eligible to be in a clinical research study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Eligible volunteers will receive all study related physical exams, lab tests, investigational medication, diet counseling, reimbursement for time and travel expenses.

Name of research study: Clinical Outcomes in MEasurement-based Treatment (COMET)
Purpose of research study:
To assess the impact of a measurement-based treatment program (MBT) on major depressive disorder remission rates in patients whose primary care providers receive patient-reported depression severity reports at different intervals.
Eligible patients must:
· Have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder and be managed by their primary care provider
· Be prescribed a new prescription for an antidepressant medication on the date of research study enrollment
· Be capable of self-management (i.e. , taking medications and responding to follow-up contacts)
· Be 18 years or older
· Understand English
What is required: The patient will complete a brief paper survey during the enrollment visit and follow-up interviews by phone.
Research study compensation: Patients who participate in this research study will receive $20 for completing a baseline survey and $20 for each follow-up phone interview.
If you are interested in participating in this research study, you must be a patient of the clinician listed below. Please talk to them if you are interested in this research study.

Are you at least 50 years of age and have a history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease such as heartattack, stroke, angina, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes? If so, you may qualify for a new clinical research study being conducted ro evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication. Qualified participants will receive all study related exams, labs, investigational medication, and reimbursement for time and travel expenses.

If you go to "Youtube.com" you can get a wide selection of health videos. I don't have control over which of the videos you see on this page. Most are very instructive. But be careful, some have a strong commercial bias, meaning they want you to buy something or have you doctor order an expensive test. In general, don't beleive something unless it is sponsored by a nonprofit organization or you see it on three respectable websites. You don't need money or testing to be in good health. Focus on the wellness part of the videos.

About Dr. Herrera

- Doc I majored in Biochemistry at Rice University. I graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1983, then specialized in Internal Medicine at Central Texas Medical Foundation. I worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Rockville, MD for three years while obtaining a Masters in Public Health. Then I worked for the University of Texas Medical School Houston for 10 years and now I am in private practice in Houston Texas. I perform clinical trials in diabetes and cholesterol treatment. I am active in community outreach programs for diabetes screening. I have been married for 22 years and have 4 children. I am writing this blog to improve my own knowledge about healthcare reform, diabetes, wellness. Also, I would like to improve the communication between me and my patients, and collaborators.

My name is Jason Gorman and I am 45 years old. My wife was taking 1200mg of Lithium Carbonate daily prescribed by the doctor for over two years. During this time no lab work was ever ordered. It built up in her system over a period of time. She was taken to the ER where she almost died. Her pulse was down to 31 and her blood pressure as low as 43 over 17. She under went kidney dialysis continuously for over 30 hours in ICU. She spent a total of 5 days in the hospital. I strongly recommend against taking Lithium. At least have periodic Lab Work done. Also if you do take this medication look up the side effects on the internet.
My wife has experienced some of these side effects-
Dizziness, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Confusion, Tremors, Muscle Weakness, Loss of Bladder Control, Inability to talk
